The Therapy

What is Enterra® Therapy?

Enterra Therapy is a minimally invasive, device-based treatment for people whose gastroparesis symptoms have not responded to dietary changes, medication or lifestyle adjustments. A small stimulator is implanted under the skin in the abdomen and connected to leads on the stomach wall, delivering gentle electrical impulses that help to settle nausea and vomiting.

It is the first and only therapy approved in Europe specifically for chronic, medication-resistant nausea and vomiting associated with gastroparesis.

Enterra Therapy implant placement

The Mechanism

How does Enterra® Therapy work?

Once implanted, the stimulator delivers programmed electrical impulses at specific frequencies, durations and amplitudes. These impulses engage neural circuits and smooth muscle within the stomach wall, helping to coordinate contractions and accelerate gastric emptying.

For many patients the result is less nausea, fewer episodes of vomiting and a more normal eating pattern. The therapy is not a cure, but a tool that supports your stomach's natural function alongside dietary advice and ongoing follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

What you should know

What is gastroparesis?
Gastroparesis is a condition in which the stomach takes longer than normal to empty its contents into the small intestine, despite there being no mechanical blockage. It often presents with nausea, vomiting, early satiety and bloating.
Who is Enterra Therapy suitable for?
It is suitable for adults aged 18–70 with confirmed gastroparesis (typically diabetic, post-surgical or idiopathic) whose chronic nausea and vomiting have not responded to standard dietary, lifestyle and medication treatments. Your specialist will assess your suitability during your appointment.
Does sending an enquiry cost anything?
No. Sending an enquiry through this website and the initial call-back from the clinic team are completely free of charge and without obligation. If you decide to book an appointment with the consultant, the usual private consultation fees apply — these are explained to you upfront so there are no surprises.
Is my data safe?
Yes. Your information is treated as strictly confidential and is only shared with the clinic you select. We are fully GDPR-compliant. You can read the details in our Privacy Policy.
How quickly will I hear back?
A specialist team will normally contact you within 1–2 working days of receiving your enquiry, using whichever method you prefer (email or phone).
Can my GP refer me?
Yes. Your GP can refer you – but you can also enquire directly through this website without a prior referral. We're happy to coordinate with your GP afterwards if that's helpful.
Will Enterra Therapy cure my gastroparesis?
No, it is not a cure – but it is a treatment option that can significantly reduce the symptoms of nausea and vomiting and improve quality of life when other approaches have not worked.
Is the implant procedure major surgery?
It's a minimally invasive procedure, usually laparoscopic, performed under general anaesthetic. Hospital stays are short and recovery is comparatively quick. Your consultant will explain everything in detail before you decide.
Which clinic should I choose?
Both Spire Manchester and Nuffield Tunbridge Wells are experienced specialist centres. Most patients simply pick whichever location is more convenient. If you're unsure, use the general enquiry form at the top of the page – we'll guide you to the right team.
What happens after I send the form?
You'll receive a brief acknowledgement, and a specialist team member will contact you within 1–2 working days using your preferred contact method – with absolutely no pressure to proceed.
